The UCPD is the starting point for the degree in forensic road collision investigation which comprises four must pass modules of 15 credits each, Collision Fundimentals 1 ENGS1003, Collision Fundimentals 2 ENGS1004, Collision Fundimentals 3 ENGS1006 and Collision Case Studies 1002). It can be studied in blended mode or distance mode.
Blended mode comprises of five 1 week residential blocks and one distance learning block with some distance learning between the blocks. In Distance mode you study the same content however all the practical content is studied during a 1 week 'summer school rather than being spread across a number of individual days during the programme.
The UCPD provides the underpinning knowledge for those intending to undertake a career in collision investigation.
Block 1 - The equations of motion, vehicles under emergency braking, stages of a collision and basic modeling using the equations of motion.
Block 2 - Statistics, scene evaluation and recording, photography.
Block 3 - Statistics, gradients, the scientific method.
Block 4 - Modeling in Excel, circular motion, critical speed and lane changes, traffic light systems, collinear momentum, expert witness Law and partial braking.
Block 5 - Limited visibility, relative motion, pedestrian collision basics, the court room and the expert witness.
Block 6 -The courts, the criminal practice rules and directions, civil practice rules and directions, expert case law, the forensic regulator. The written report
Blocks 1, 2 and 3 all include practical days at a local airfield where we learn the skills of identifying tyre marks, emergency brake and drag testing including competency in the use of ScenePro.
There are various exercises presented throughout the blocks to help you develop your reconstruction skills.

Your joining instructions list any specific requirements. General tools include a scientific calculator. We recommend any Casio with a 'Natural Display'. A computer with Internet access is required for this course.
The course notes are accessed via the AiTS virtual learning environment. You will have a named tutor who will support you during the programme.
